Where Chef’s Eat: Andrew Tabberner, Gaerwen Arms

Chef Andrew holdings dishes from the market menu

Head Chef Andrew Tabberner from The Gaerwen Arms shares some of his favourite places to dine within the North Wales area.

Update: Due to an unfortunate fire, The Gaerwen Arms is now closed. However you can find Andy over at the fantastic Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias, and Oli has now opened the Picadilly Inn at Caerwys.

Back in 2019, Andrew and business partner Oli Thompson took over the unassuming Gaerwen Arms pub, and completely transformed the menu & dining experience for the better.

This two AA Rossete awarded pub combines local suppliers and home-grown produce to create flavourful modern British dishes within their every day menu and inspiring taster evenings.

Andrew won the Junior Chef of Wales back in 2015, which lead him to become head chef at The Loft restaurant in The Bull, Beaumaris, and then Executive Head chef for both of the restaurants.

Gaerwen Arms has fast become a favourite with many locals (myself included), and this is down to Andrew and Oli’s fantastic work, and the rest of the wonderful team.

As well as finding out what Gaerwen Arms has to offer and future plans, let’s find out where Andrew enjoys eating during his time away from the kitchen.

Andrew’s Recommendations

My three favourite places to eat within North Wales are all very different!

My first go to is Sapore Italian in Llandudno. It had to be! This is an incredible Italian with great service. I highly recommend a bottle of the pecorino with your meal.

A recent favourite is The White Horse in Hendrerwydd. What a place! I could have easily had one of everything off the menu. The setting is beautiful and matches the fantastic food.

If you’re after a special treat, I recommend Palé Hall in Bala. From the moment you make your way down their drive you know you're at one of the best hotels in the UK! Gareth and the team are creating some amazing food.

Next on my list to get to is Penmaenuchaf Hall in Dolgellau. Neil the new owner is an old boss of mine from my time in South Wales, and he has a string of award winning restaurants. I'm definitely looking forward to heading over there.

Gaerwen Arms: What’s On

Market Menu: Our Market Menu focuses on sustainability & local produce, which is very much the theme of GA. The menu is updated regularly in order to cook seasonally and add variation for regulars. This Market Menu is available alongside our usual offerings, and runs Wednesday to Friday lunch & evening, & Saturday lunch. It's £18 for 2 courses and £22 for 3 courses. Read about it in more detail.

Tasting Menu: After the success of last time’s offering, we are hosting another Taster Evening on Thursday the 23rd March. To book, just give us a call or drop is a message on Messenger.

Take a look at their last Taster Evening.

Many thanks to Andrew for taking time for NWG! To stay up to date, make sure you follow Gaerwen Arms on social media.
